How to get backlinks: ranking on Google and being named in AI answers.

Quick answer

Small businesses get backlinks by earning mentions from real, relevant sites: suppliers' stockist pages, industry associations, local chambers, partner businesses, journalists, podcasts and editorial features. Add one genuinely useful resource people want to reference, ask anyone who already mentions you to link, and never buy links.

That mix is what Google rewards and what AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity read as proof that you are worth recommending. Below: what makes a link worth having, how many you actually need, 12 honest ways to earn them, what to avoid, and a 90-day plan you can run in a couple of hours a week.

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Search engines treat it as a vote: someone else thought your page was worth pointing to. But votes are not equal. One link from your industry association can outweigh fifty from directories nobody visits.

The test we use: would this link still make sense if Google did not exist? If a real customer could follow it and land somewhere useful, it is the kind of link that lasts. For a deeper look at quality signals, see what good backlink quality looks like.

Yes, and arguably more. Google still uses links to understand which sites are trusted. AI assistants go a step further: when they decide which businesses to name, they lean heavily on what other sites say about you. A feature, an association listing or a news quote is someone else vouching for you, and that is exactly the evidence AI models look for.

Even a mention without a link helps your AI visibility, because the assistant can read the text. A linked mention does both jobs at once, which is why earning links and earning citations are now the same piece of work. We cover the AI side in more depth in AEO vs GEO.

Fewer than you think, and it depends entirely on who you are up against. A suburban physio competing with three other clinics needs a different number from a national ecommerce brand.

Here is the practical way to work it out. Search your main service and suburb, take the top three organic results, and check how many referring domains (unique websites linking to them) each has, using a free tool such as Ahrefs Webmaster Tools or the free tier of Ubersuggest. Your target is to match the middle one with links of equal or better quality. For many local service businesses that is somewhere between 15 and 60 good referring domains, not thousands of backlinks.

Count referring domains, not total backlinks. Ten links from one site count for far less than one link each from ten sites.

12Replacing broken links on local resource pagesMediumMediumNiche local topics
1. Supplier and manufacturer pages. If you install, stock or resell a brand, there is a good chance they have a "where to buy" or "find an installer" page. These are some of the easiest high-relevance links available. Email your account manager and ask to be listed. 2. Industry associations. Member directories from bodies such as your professional association or trade guild are trusted, relevant and usually included in your membership. Make sure your listing is complete and links to the right page. 3. Local chambers and council directories. Many chambers list members with a link, and some councils run local business directories. Both send strong local signals for suburb and town searches. 4. Genuine partner businesses. A builder and a building inspector, a physio and a personal trainer, a bookkeeper and a marketing agency. If you really refer clients to each other, a "businesses we trust" page on each site is natural. Bulk link swaps with strangers are not. 5. Journalist requests. Services such as SourceBottle send daily requests from Australian journalists looking for sources. Answer only the ones you can genuinely speak to, answer fast, and keep it short and quotable. One national news link can outweigh a year of directory listings. 6. Podcasts. Small industry and local business podcasts always need guests, and most link to guests in their show notes. It also gives AI assistants another place to read about you. 7. Editorial features. Some Australian sites feature real small business stories for free. Our own Business Spotlight publishes owners' views on AI search and marketing, and you can pitch us here. True Tally's Small Business Spotlight does the same for money lessons. 8. A linkable resource. Build one thing people want to reference: a cost calculator, a compliance checklist, a local price survey or a clear explainer. These earn links slowly but keep earning them for years. 9. Unlinked mentions. Search your business name in quotes. Wherever you are mentioned without a link, send a short, friendly note asking if they would add one. Conversion rates are high because they already like you. 10. Community sponsorships. Junior sports clubs, school fetes and local events usually thank sponsors on their website. Pick causes you care about; the link is a bonus, not the reason. 11. Case studies for tools and suppliers. Software companies and suppliers love customer stories. If a tool genuinely changed how you work, offer to be a case study. 12. Broken link replacement. Local resource pages often link to businesses that have closed. If you offer the same thing, let the site owner know about the dead link and suggest your page as a replacement.

For a business that serves an area rather than the whole country, local links punch well above their weight. A link from your council, your chamber, a local news site or the footy club tells Google exactly where you belong, and it is something a national competitor cannot easily copy.

Pair those links with consistent business details on your Google, Bing and Apple listings and you build the local trust that drives map pack rankings. If you are just getting started, True Tally's free New Business Visibility Kit walks through the listings to claim first, and our local SEO service covers the rest.

Google's spam policies are clear that links bought, sold or exchanged to manipulate rankings are link spam. Sites caught doing it can be demoted or ignored entirely, and the clean-up takes months. Avoid:

If you have already bought links in the past, stop, and talk to someone before you panic. Google ignores most low-quality links on its own, and the disavow tool is only needed in specific situations.

Does anchor text matter?

Less than it used to, and chasing it is risky. Natural links mostly use your business name, your website address, or phrases like "this guide". A link profile where most anchors are exact-match keywords looks manufactured.

Let the linking site choose the wording. If you are asked, suggest your business name. The relevance of the page linking to you matters far more than the words in the link.

Google needs to find the new link first, which can take days to a few weeks depending on how often it crawls the linking page. The ranking effect then builds gradually. Most small businesses start to see movement two to six months after a steady run of good links, and the effect compounds over time.

AI visibility can move faster for some mentions, especially features and news coverage that AI search tools pick up quickly. Track both: your Google rankings for target searches, and whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name you when you ask a buyer's question.

Check monthly. You are looking for a steady rise in referring domains from relevant sites, and any sudden spikes from sites you do not recognise, which can be a sign of spam pointing at you.

WhenDo this
Weeks 1 to 2Benchmark the top three competitors' referring domains. List your suppliers, associations, chamber and partners.
Weeks 3 to 4Request supplier, association and chamber listings. Search for unlinked mentions and ask for links.
Weeks 5 to 6Sign up for journalist requests and answer two you can genuinely speak to. Pitch one podcast.
Weeks 7 to 8Apply for one or two editorial features. Offer a case study to a supplier or software you use.
Weeks 9 to 12Build or improve one linkable resource on your site, then tell the people who would use it.
Week 13Re-check referring domains and rankings. Double down on whatever earned the best links.

Two hours a week on this list will outperform most paid link packages, and nothing on it will ever come back to bite you.

We build links the slow, safe way, because it is the way that lasts: digital PR, journalist responses, partner and association placements, and linkable resources, all aimed at sites your customers and AI assistants already trust. Every link is earned and every placement is reported. See our link building service, or book a free strategy call and we will benchmark your links against your top three competitors.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get backlinks to my website for free?

Ask suppliers to add you to their stockist or installer pages, complete your industry association and chamber listings, answer journalist requests on services like SourceBottle, apply for editorial features, guest on podcasts, and ask anyone who already mentions your business to add a link. All of these are free and none break Google's rules.

How many backlinks does a small business need?

Enough to match the competitors ranking above you, measured in referring domains (unique sites), not total links. Check the top three results for your main search with a free tool like Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. For many local service businesses the target is roughly 15 to 60 good referring domains.

Is it OK to buy backlinks?

No. Google's spam policies treat links bought to manipulate rankings as link spam, and sites caught doing it can be demoted. Paid placements must use rel="sponsored", which means they pass no ranking value. Cheap backlink packages are one of the most common reasons small sites lose visibility.

How long do backlinks take to work?

Google can take days to weeks to find a new link, and ranking improvements usually build over two to six months of steady, good-quality links. The effect compounds, so the earlier you start the better.

Do backlinks help with ChatGPT and AI search?

Yes. AI assistants recommend businesses that other trusted sites mention. A linked mention on a reputable site helps Google rankings and gives AI models evidence to name you, which is why link building and AI visibility now overlap.

What is the difference between a backlink and a referring domain?

A backlink is a single link. A referring domain is a unique website that links to you, however many times. Ten links from one site count as ten backlinks but only one referring domain, and referring domains are the better measure of authority.
