AEO for Finance Brokers: How to Get Recommended by AI Search
The short answer
AI assistants recommend the finance broker they can most clearly identify as a real, licensed business, whose website answers the exact questions borrowers ask, and whose details they see repeated consistently across the directories and reviews they trust. There is no paid slot and no shortcut. You earn the recommendation by being the clearest, most verifiable broker for the question being asked.
That is what Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) does for a brokerage: it lines up the signals an AI model checks before it is willing to put your name in an answer. Below is the method, in the order that actually moves the needle for finance and mortgage brokers in Australia.
Why AI search matters for brokers now
More borrowers now open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity before they open Google, and they ask things like "find me a good mortgage broker in Perth" or "should I use a broker or go straight to the bank". The AI gives a short, confident answer and names a handful of businesses. If it does not know your brokerage exists, you are invisible at the precise moment someone has decided they want a broker.
This is also happening inside Google itself, through AI Overviews and AI Mode, which increasingly answer the question on the results page and name sources rather than sending a long list of blue links. Being the named source is the new front page.
Still weighing whether this is worth the effort for your brokerage? Start with do mortgage brokers need AEO.
How AI decides which broker to name
It comes down to three things, and they map to the three disciplines we run: can it identify you, can it trust your answers, and does the rest of the web agree you are who you say you are.
1. Entity clarity. Is your brokerage a clearly defined, licensed, identifiable business with consistent facts? AI will not confidently name a business it cannot pin down.
2. Answer quality. Do your pages answer borrower questions directly, in plain language, in a format a model can lift?
3. Off-site trust. Do the directories, reviews and press the model reads agree on who you are and say good things? This is the part most brokers never build.
There is more detail on the mechanics in our guide to how ChatGPT chooses which finance broker to recommend.
Step 1: Make your brokerage a clear entity
This is the foundation, and it is where most brokers are invisible. Your website needs machine-readable structured data (FinancialService or LocalBusiness schema) that states your business name, your service areas, your licensing, and the kinds of lending you do, listed as distinct specialties: first home buyers, refinancing, investment, commercial, self-employed, SMSF lending.
Name your brokers as people, with their credentials, and link those profiles out to the places that verify them: your MFAA or FBAA listing and LinkedIn. Those outbound verification links, called sameAs, are how a model confirms a named broker is a real, accredited person rather than a claim on a page.
Add an llms.txt file to your site, a plain summary of who you are, where you operate, what you do and that you are a licensed credit business. It gives AI models a clean source of truth to read. The full setup is in our guide to finance broker schema and Google Business Profile.
Step 2: Answer the questions borrowers actually ask
AI breaks a question into smaller ones and pulls a source for each. So you win by owning the whole question space, not one page. Build a clear, answer-first page for each real borrower question: how much can I borrow, is a broker cheaper than going to the bank, how much does a mortgage broker cost, what does a first home buyer need in your state, what is the Best Interests Duty.
Start each answer with the answer. For example, that a mortgage broker is usually paid by the lender through commission rather than a fee to the borrower, and that since 1 January 2021 brokers have been bound by a Best Interests Duty to act in the borrower's interest. Then add a genuine FAQ with schema, because question-and-answer pairs are the single format AI models lift most often.
A tool like Ubersuggest helps you find the exact phrasing borrowers use, so you build pages around real questions instead of guessing.
Step 3: Get consistent across the directories AI reads
AI cross-checks your details against the sources it already trusts. For Australian brokers that means your MFAA or FBAA find-a-broker profile, your aggregator's broker page (Connective, AFG, Loan Market, Finsure and the like), your Google Business Profile, and review sites such as Product Review. Your business name, address, phone, service areas and specialties must match exactly across all of them. Contradictions make a model hedge, and a hedging model does not name you.
We cover the specific list, and which ones carry the most weight, in which directories AI assistants read for Australian finance brokers.
Step 4: Earn trust signals AI can see
Beyond your own site, models weigh reputation. A steady flow of genuine Google reviews, being quoted as a broker in finance or local press, and contributing real expert commentary all tell a model your brokerage is notable and trusted.
It also helps to be present where AI samples its answers. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity lean heavily on Reddit and YouTube, so a genuinely helpful answer in a borrowing thread, or a short video explaining a lending question, can end up feeding the AI that later names you.
Step 5: Measure whether AI actually names you
You cannot improve what you cannot see. Track how often an AI assistant names your brokerage for your target questions, and watch the AI Overviews report in Google Search Console. A tool such as SignalTo shows where you stand in AI answers now, so you can prove progress and find the questions where a competitor is named and you are not.
Then keep building pages against those gaps. AEO compounds: every clear answer and consistent citation makes the next recommendation more likely.
How long it takes, honestly
This is a compounding play, not a switch. Entity and schema fixes can be read within weeks, but the trust and citation signals build over months. The fastest lever is a single, specific, well-documented result, which is exactly why we start every brokerage with the free audit, so we have a clear before picture to improve from.

Frequently asked questions
How do finance brokers get recommended by AI like ChatGPT?
By being a clearly identifiable, licensed business with structured data, answering real borrower questions in plain language with FAQ markup, and keeping consistent details and good reviews across the directories AI trusts. There is no paid placement; the recommendation is earned.
Do I need a new website to show up in AI search?
No. You use your existing site. What changes is adding structured data, clear answer-first content and an llms.txt summary, then making your details consistent across directories and reviews. These are additions, not a rebuild.
How is AEO different from SEO for a broker?
SEO aims to rank your pages in Google's results. AEO aims to be the broker an AI assistant names in its answer. They share foundations, but AEO leans more on entity clarity, structured answers and consistent off-site citations.
How long before AI starts naming my brokerage?
Entity and schema changes can be picked up within weeks, but the trust and citation signals that get you named consistently build over a few months. A documented first result speeds it up, which is why we start with a baseline audit.
Can AI recommend me if I'm a credit representative, not a licensee?
Yes. What matters is that your licensing status is stated clearly and consistently, whether you hold your own Australian Credit Licence or operate as an authorised credit representative under a licensee. Clarity builds trust; hiding the detail does not.
What is the single most important thing?
Entity clarity backed by consistent, verifiable details everywhere. If an AI model can confidently identify your brokerage as a real, licensed business that borrowers trust, everything else compounds on top of it.
