What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)?

Published 2026-08-15 · Intrigue Digital

Defining GEO

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation. It is the discipline of building the deeper trust signals, citations, consistent facts and entity relationships, that generative AI models cross-check before they are willing to recommend a brand by name.

If AEO is about the content on your page, GEO is about your reputation across the whole web that AI reads to decide whether to trust that content.

The three GEO signals that matter most

1. Consistency. Your name, services and claims should say the same thing everywhere. Contradictions make AI hedge.

2. Citations. Being referenced by other reputable sites tells models your brand is real and notable.

3. Entity clarity. AI should be able to tell exactly what you are, who you serve and where. Structured data and clear language do this.

Tools that help

Tracking mentions and backlinks is where platforms like SEMrush earn their keep, and Ubersuggest helps you spot the topics worth building authority around. Keeping publishing consistent is easier with a workflow tool such as GoHighLevel.

Why GEO is the long game

GEO compounds. Every consistent citation and clean piece of structured data makes the next AI recommendation more likely. It is slower than a quick SEO fix, but it is what keeps you being named as models change.
